Run a Kotlin Multiplatform app on iOS

Android Studio or IntelliJ IDEA with the KMP plugin, Xcode, and the iosApp run configuration.

JetBrains’ quickstart is clear that building the iOS app needs a Mac with Xcode; the IDE runs Xcode for you.

  1. Install Xcode and open it once so it finishes its setup. Do this again after every Xcode update.
  2. On the desktop (Screen Sharing), install Android Studio or IntelliJ IDEA, then the Kotlin Multiplatform plugin from Settings → Plugins → Marketplace.
  3. Open your project, select the iosApp run configuration and a simulated device, and run it. The first build takes longer while it collects native dependencies.

If there’s no simulator to pick or a preflight check fails, open Xcode and check for iOS SDK updates, as JetBrains suggests.
